Giant cruise ship left stranded overnight in Thurrock by Storm Aileen

A GIANT cruise ship was stuck in Tilbury overnight due to Storm Aileen.

Mein Schiff 3, owned by TUI, was the largest cruise ship to ever to visit the London International Cruise Terminal, at 293.3 metres long and weighing 99,526 gross tonnes.

It arrived from Le Havre in France yesterday morning and was due to leave at 9pm for Zeebrugge, but was left stranded in Thurrock overnight.

Martin Garside, spokesman for the Port of London Authority, said: “Because of the storm, the weather was very bad in the English Channel and the North Sea, plus there were high winds, generally – so her departure was delayed until this morning.”

The ship finally set sail at roughly midday today, Mr Garside said.

Storm Aileen has also caused traffic chaos across Essex this morning, knocking down trees and power cables all over the county.
