Worker’s dramatic escape after being submerged in Tees when excavator toppled into water

A worker was submerged in the River Tees for up to a minute after an excavator plunged into the water while he was inside, eyewitnesses have said.

Further details have now emerged after emergency services were called to Tees Dock Road, Grangetown, on Wednesday to reports machinery had fallen onto a man.

The contractor had been working on the new South Bank Quay at Teesworks and the Health and Safety Executive confirmed on Thursday that it was looking into the incident . The man was treated for a head and hand injuries at James Cook University Hospital but has since been discharged . . . .
