Europe’s first ultra-high-power charging system for ports launches at DP World London Gateway
Kempower, DP World and Kalmar partner on Europe’s first ultra-high-power charging system for ports at DP World London Gateway
London, UK 11th December 2024 – Finnish DC fast-charging manufacturer Kempower has announced a groundbreaking partnership with DP World, a global logistics leader, to deploy Europe’s first ultra-high-power 500A continuous charging system for Kalmar electric straddle carriers at its port facility DP World London Gateway.
The partnership enables ultra-rapid charging and efficient operations while eliminating almost all noise pollution, vibrations and emissions harmful to the nearby populations of the port facility.
Kempower’s charging system powers eight new Kalmar electric straddle carriers, which can be charged from 0 to full in just 45 minutes. The modular design provides redundancy, ensuring the highest uptime of three to four hours’ continuous operation which aligns perfectly with driver break schedules.
Kempower’s port offering has the smallest footprint on the market making it an efficient and space-saving charging solution that fits into existing infrastructure with minimal needs for adjustment.
Kempower equips DP World London Gateway with eight liquid-cooled charging Satellites, a 550 kW Power Unit, and the Kempower ChargEye charging management system. The first charging station was commissioned in May 2024.
“We are very excited to be part of this ground-breaking project to electrify DP World London Gateway. Our experience and relationship with the port OEMs enabled us to deeply understand DP World’s needs and provide them with an optimal charging solution through our consultative collaboration. Our strong relationship with Kalmar allowed for comprehensive interoperability testing, ensuring seamless integration of our charging system with the electric straddle carriers,” said Jussi Vanhanen, Chief Market Officer at Kempower.
Andrew Bowen, UK Chief Operating Officer at DP World, said:
“We are delighted to work with Kempower on this project, alongside our longstanding partner Kalmar, which builds on five years of work at London Gateway to successfully convert our hybrid straddle carrier fleet into a fully electric operation.”
“This latest partnership to deliver green investment is a part of DP World’s goal to use innovative technology to become a net zero logistics organisation by 2050 while providing our customers with the best possible end-to-end logistics solutions.”
Electrifying straddle carriers supports DP World’s commitment to become carbon-neutral by 2040 and its intermediate target of 28% reduction of its carbon footprint by 2030.
This project marks a significant step for Kempower as the company expands its solutions into the port segment. Following the successful implementation of this pilot, DP World and Kempower look forward to exploring further collaboration and potential expansion
