WDC’s new Report Tackling ghost gear: research on and solutions for the state of harbour waste management in the UK
The report highlights the challenges of managing end-of-life (EOL) fishing gear due to inadequate waste management, resulting in environmental and economic harm. Despite the UK’s commitment to address marine pollution, the current Port Waste Reception Regime lacks incentives for returning fishing gear, contributing to waste discharge at sea. The study surveyed 41% of UK harbours associated with fishing, revealing inconsistent waste management practices and limited recycling. It emphasises the need for coordinated local, national, and international efforts, aligned with global initiatives, to mitigate marine pollution and promote sustainable fishing practices.
