MP Damian Hinds Visits OceanWise to Explore SME Maritime Innovation

Alton-based OceanWise, a specialist in maritime environmental monitoring, mapping, and data management, recently hosted local MP Damian Hinds at their Hampshire headquarters. The visit, facilitated by the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI), aimed to give MPs first-hand insight into the challenges and innovation within the UK’s maritime sector.

During his visit, Damian Hinds met the OceanWise team and toured the company’s workshop, where he witnessed demonstrations of the innovative systems the company develops to monitor marine environments and deliver critical data to clients worldwide.

Managing Director Caroline Levey outlined some of the key challenges facing SMEs in the maritime sector. She highlighted issues in retaining apprentices after training and discussed government procurement processes. Caroline explained that while competitive tendering drives cost efficiencies, an overemphasis on lowest price can compromise technical quality and long-term project delivery. She advocated for procurement frameworks that recognise the value of technical expertise and system reliability.

Founded in 2010, OceanWise combines knowledge of marine environments with engineering and data management skills to design and deliver robust environmental monitoring solutions. With a team of 18, the company works on innovative projects globally, providing clients with the reliable data they need to make informed decisions about marine and coastal environments.

Caroline Levey said:

“Engaging with our local MP gave us an invaluable opportunity to share our perspective as an SME operating in a technically demanding sector. We hope Damian gained insight into the practical challenges that affect small maritime businesses and the importance of supporting innovation alongside cost considerations in government procurement.”

Damian Hinds, MP for East Hampshire, said:

“One of the great things about my role as East Hampshire MP is getting to know the interesting and creative companies in our midst.  OceanWise is a great local success story and I was pleased to learn more about the business and a vital sector I knew little about.  It’s important public sector agencies work with firms like OceanWise to maximise opportunities for innovation, ultimately creating employment and growth.”
